The court interpreter's job is to render everything said in court from the source (non-English) language into the target (English) language.

For whom are court interpreter services provided?
Court interpreter services are provided to non-English speaking litigants and defendants during judicial proceedings to make them "present" and able to participate effectively during the proceeding.

Court interpreter services are also provided for witnessess for the purpose of presenting evidence to the court.  The English language portions of the interpretation are part of the court record for the proceeding.

Interpreter services are also provided for interview or consultation settings, such as interviews between an attorney and client.

Court interpreting services for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing:
Court interpreting services are provided for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing in each type of proceeding or setting listed previously.  In addition, services are also provided for persons who serve as jurors or grand jurors, or who require interpreter services in order to participate in any court program or service.
